Solar pool pump guide
Solar pool pump basics
What a solar pool pump does, how to size one, and why a hybrid AC/DC pump keeps your pool running when the sun goes in.
Solar pool pump basics in four steps
- Know your pump’s running cost. Volts × amps from the motor label ÷ 1,000, × hours per day, × days in the billing cycle, × your rate.
- Know your pool. Gallons, filter, plumbing, and any spa or water features on the same pump.
- Choose DC-only or hybrid. DC-only stops without sun. Hybrid AC/DC switches to AC automatically when needed.
- Find the panel spot. Somewhere near the equipment with open sun for most of the day.
Why SunRay builds hybrid AC/DC pumps
SunRay hybrid AC/DC solar pool pumps are Made in USA, with Pentair wet ends and the Natural Current hybrid AC/DC motor. They run on the sun and switch to AC automatically when needed. Savings are up to 30%, varies by sun and rate.

Questions and answers
What is a solar pool pump?
A pool pump powered by solar panels. It circulates and filters your pool water with energy from the sun instead of buying all of it from the utility.
DC solar pump or hybrid AC/DC?
A DC-only pump runs only while the panels produce. A hybrid AC/DC pump like SunRay runs on the sun and switches to AC automatically when needed.
Does it heat my pool?
No. A solar pool pump moves water; solar pool heating is a different system. You can have both.
How much can I save?
Savings are up to 30%, varies by sun and rate.
Is there a federal tax credit?
No. There is no 30% federal tax credit for these pumps any longer. Price your pump at the listed price.
